Water Injection and Maintenance

To carry out necessary work as gently as possible, the location Cuxhaven primarily uses the so-called water injection process. During it, water is injected into the bed of the body of water, where it can penetrate cavities within the sediment and loosen sediment particles.

The particles then mix with the water and a suspension layer forms on top of the bed of the waterway and are subsequently carried away by the natural currents of the Elbe River. In comparison to the dredging with hopper dredgers (extraction dredging), this represents a more cost-efficient and also a gentler process. Through continuous monitoring and diligent planning, intrusions can be limited to an absolutely necessary minimum. This prevents the environment from unnecessary damage and unnecessary costs can be spared.

As the port infrastructure company, Niedersachsen Ports ensures the necessary water depths of the water areas within the port area. The depth maintenance is checked by the branch by performing sonar measurements in regular intervals. Should these sonar measurement indicate the need for dredging, it is paramount for us, to dredge as gently as possible. This is why we mostly employ the so-called water injection procedure at the Brake Location. In addition to the navigation, the introduction of e.g. surface water also constitutes a utilization of the waterways. To ensure that during this process as little pollution loads, such as load residues, are carried into the surrounding waters, an intensive and permanent cleaning of the port areas is performed, using a motorized sweeper truck.

Complementing this measure is a drainage canal cleaning apparatus, which removed deposits inside the drainage systems.
